Coronavirus-COVID-19: How to eliminate the virus from beds and sofas
Beds and sofas are the realm of microorganisms for several reasons.
In the bed we sweat and lose organic microparticles, skin fragments, hair, hair etc. which are an excellent nourishment for many microorganisms, including mites.
The heat of our body and the moisture we release are the ideal environment for their proliferation.
It is estimated that a two-year-old pillow can have an amount of mites and their excrement equal to 30% of the pillow weight.
Where mites proliferate, other microorganisms also find fertile ground.
Bacteria and viruses find the right environment and even Coronavirus-COVID-19 can survive better in dirty, humid, lukewarm environments.
To drastically limit the proliferation of these organisms, we must:
1) Use bed linen that does not favour dust and mites
3) Do not use blankets, but a duvet inserted inside a duvet cover, the double ones in which the duvet is inserted as inside a pillowcase.
4) Wash down jackets and pillows at least every three months at 60 degrees.
Perform a strong drying in the dryer to prevent other microorganisms or mold from developing during drying.
If you let the duvet dry naturally, without drying, the drying time can be too long and the humid heat favors the increase of microorganisms.
Strong mechanical drying causes warming above 60 degrees that prevents the development of bacteria and mites.
With a few euros, you can perform these tasks in a laundromat.
5) Wash curtains and sofa coverings at least every 3 months, at 60 or 90 degrees.
Some sofas are harder to unfurn, but with a bit of effort you'll be able to do it.
Unfurling the sofa is the only way to clean it well.
Leather sofas should be cleaned with special disinfectants so as not to spoil them.
If the sofa is impossible to unfurl, you can use special powders for dry cleaning. You let it act for ten or fifteen minutes and then remove it with a powerful vacuum cleaner, like the Folletto.
6) Minimize the use of fabrics in furniture to the maximum: carpets, curtains, etc.
The choice of fabrics is very important.
Keep in mind that while they are very different, the places where mites proliferate are also great for many bacteria and viruses.
Therefore, below we talk about mites, but the considerations also apply in some respects to bacteria and viruses and Coronavirus-COVID-19.
For mites there are specific anti-mite tissues.
These fabrics are of two types:
- Those that do not pass mites, generally have a waterproof layer type of rubber or plastic.
This prevents the passage of mites, but limits perspiration.
We recommend this type of fabric as a mattress protection.
On top of it you will put a normal mattress cover to facilitate transudation.
This way you will avoid a passage of organic material such as sweat, skin, hair from the bed to the mattress.
You will also prevent any mites from the mattress from reaching the sheets, passing them by.
- Anti-mite is also called anti-mite tissues that do not allow the nesting and proliferation of mites.
These fabrics are synthetic and therefore do not provide nourishment for mites, and it is difficult for them to cling to these harder and smoother fibers compared to organic tissues such as cotton and linen.
These fabrics are fine but do not constitute a barrier for mites.
If you use such a pillowcase on a pillow that contains mites, the mites will not nest in the fabric of the pillowcase, but will still be able to cross it.
They're fine if you also use the anti-mite cushion.
It is generally a solution indicated in the most severe cases, where there are allergies that cannot be solved by other methods.
In case you have allergies you should definitely hear the suggestions of an expert who can follow you directly.
Recommendations
In addition to this, we recommend:
1) Wash pillowcases and sheets at 60 degrees, better 90, at least every 3 days.
2) Wash the pillow often at a temperature above 60 degrees.
With the normal washing machine you can wash one pillow at a time.
3) Buy new pillows once a year
4) Change the maximum mattress every two or three years and always protect it with an anti-mite mattress cover, rubberized ones, and a normal cotton mattress.
5) Use pillowcases and sheets that do not release organic particles (see tissue choice below)
Choice of fabrics
Unless you have several indications from the specialist who follows your allergies, we recommend using cotton satin sheets, for the following reasons:
1) Linen or silk sheets are better, but more expensive. If you can afford them, come.
2) Cotton sheets tend to release cotton lint that create dust and dirt that become great nourishment for mites and bacteria, also becoming transfer vectors within the room.
3) Synthetic tissues are a great solution but do not guarantee good perspiration of the body.
They tend to get wet with sweat and therefore are to be used only if necessary for reasons of severe allergies.
The satin cotton fabric offers the following advantages:
1) In the weave satin and warp are woven in a different way that makes the fabric smoother and more shiny.
In addition to being much nicer, this system makes it more compact and therefore almost completely cancels out the loss of cotton lint, a common problem in normal cotton sheets.
2) It is an organic, healthy and clean material.
Easy to wash and durable, washable at 60 and 90 degrees without deteriorating it.
So it can be sanitized very well.
3) Comfortable.
Stay dry.
It absorbs the slight moisture of our body and prevents us from sleeping damp.
So very healthy.
4) The thread with which the satin fabric is made is twisted.
Basically each wire is made from different wires rolled together.
In the satin this roll is repeated to ensure a better adherence of the cotton fillets that make up it, preventing them from spreading through the air.
Coronavirus-COVID-19
Many of the recommendations also refer to Coronavirus-COVID-19.
However, consider that viruses are much smaller than a mite and therefore only a rubberized tissue, or a virus-specific filter, can be a barrier.
In any case a clean and sterile environment makes it more difficult to survive a virus, and is definitely more comfortable.
